What is this app?
A utility to let you improve your breathing technique. You simply set your inhale, exhale, and hold times to whatever you want, and this app will give you cues of when to start inhaling and exhaling.
(Note: This article was written for the Paced Breathing Android app. There is an iOS version of the app with it's own iOS tutorial)
Is this app safe to use?
The key to breathing is to not force yourself, you should never be straining yourself during your sessions- the point is to relax. If you find it hard to complete a session, please please please stop the session and readjust your times. Also, if you have any health issues, especially lung related issues, make sure to check with your doctor and to pay especially close attention to what your body is telling you.
I just want to get started!
Just click on "Press to Start" to begin a session. You'll hear a sound right away, just follow the instructions on the screen.
How do I stop the session?
Just click anywhere on the graph
The times are too fast (or slow)!
No worries, simply click on the top half of the screen (on the graph) to stop the current session. Now press on one of the inhale, exhale, or hold times. You'll see a menu pop up over the graph. You can scroll through this menu and pick the right time for you. Adjust all your times to what you feel is comfortable and start again.
How can I improve my breathing with this?
You can either use the app daily and adjust your times as your pace improves or you can use the ramp feature. With ramp Paced Breathing will change your breathing times during a session for you. For example, you can start with a regular breathing rate, and over the course of 10 minutes progress to a very slow relaxing pace. Check this page out for an in-depth look at ramping, or just click on "Off" to the right of "Ramp" to turn it on.
I want to do a 10 minute session
Just click on "Off" to the right of "Timer" and select 10:00. Your session will stop automatically 10 minutes after you start it.
I don't like the sound!
You can click on the sound icon in the lower left hand corner and change the sound. There are a few different options.
I don't want sound, but I still want feedback!
We have haptic (vibrate) feedback too. Just turn off the sound from the sound menu and click the vibrate icon (the icon to the right of the sound icon).
Can I multitask?
Yes, you can open other apps and your session will continue. To get back, just click on our notification.
The screen keeps turning off!
Just click the icon to the right of the vibrate icon to keep your screen awake while the Paced Breathing app is open
I want to switch between different sets of breathing times!
Just click on the + icon in the upper right hand corner (if you see no + icon, go to your menu and click on "Create Profile"). Enter a name for your new profile and click create. You'll see your new profile now, just set your new times and go! No need to worry about saving, everything autosaves! To switch profiles, just swipe left or right. If you get a new phone and install Paced Breathing on it, your profiles will even be restored! If you are having issues, check out this page for more details on profiles.
I want more stats/info!
Below the graph, to the left you'll see BPM which shows you how many breathes per minute you're taking with the current pace. To the right you'll see Clock, which shows you how long your current session has been going on for. We are working to add session logging so you can see your history as you've progressed, so stay tuned!
Can you suggest some good settings to get the most out of the app?
This is actually pretty tricky to do because peoples' breathing is so different and so are their goals. Here are the times we've personally used to help us get going every morning. Even with a relatively short 5-10 minute session you should notice you're more relaxed throughout the day, and in general have a more positive outlook on your day! Remember, the key is to not force yourself, you should never be straining yourself during your sessions- the point is to relax. If you find it hard to complete this or any other session, please please please stop the session and readjust your times.
Ramping: 8:00, Timer: 10:00
Start: inhale 4.0s, hold 1.5s, exhale 4.0s, hold 1.5s
Finish: inhale 8.0s, hold 2.0s, exhale 8.0s, hold 2.0s
Sound: binaural beats (use w/ headphones)
Vibrate: off
Screen awake: on
I found an awesome way to use Paced Breathing

-Breathe Easy
Excellent app for regulating the purak, kumbhak and rechak in pranayam. Use it for anulom vilom, ujjayi and surya bhedan pranayama wherein breathing cycle need to beregulated.
ReplyDeleteThis app is awesome, thank you so much!
ReplyDeleteAmazing app, best one on the subject, do u plan on adding heart coherance real time graph with Bluetooth support for chestbands and smartwatches? History would also be great :)
ReplyDeleteI would like to have this function as well!
DeleteI second this. Real time monitoring of heart rate coherence and / or HRV using a Bluetooth heart rate monitor, or the phone camera, would be awesome.
DeleteWould be great if it worked with the screen turned off.
ReplyDeleteSound for "Hold" after inhale and exhale is missing.
ReplyDeleteIt will better if there is sound for "Hold" time.
I play an instrument and this helps a lot when holding out long notes
ReplyDeleteI can't hear any sounds at all.
ReplyDeleteare sounds turned on? (click the bottom left icon that looks like a speaker and make sure to select a sound)
Deletemake sure your phone's volume is also turned up.
last thing you can try is going to the in-app menu and clicking on volume. Make sure that's turned up (setting is lower can be helpful if you want the Paced Breathing sounds to be quieter so you can listen to music while you use it)
I don't understand wat rampling means ?
ReplyDeleteHey Walter! Check out our post here about ramping: http://bit.ly/208mbQF
Deletethe short version is: ramping lets you change your inhale, exhale, and hold times during the course of your session so you can start at a more natural time of say 4s inhale, 2s holds, & 4s exhales and progress over the course of say 2:00 minutes to something more relaxing like 8s inhale, 8s hold, & 8s exhales.
How can i change the bmp setting on the top left? I tried to tap many times, different places but the program starts instead or the profile changes. Annoying
ReplyDeleteHey Matilde!
DeleteThe Breathes Per Minute (BPM) isn't a button directly, it's calculated based on the inhale, exhale, & hold times you set, so if you change those the BMP will update.
This article can show you how to do that, in section called: "The times are too fast (or slow)!".
For the first time ever this app isn't workng correctly it resets, goes silent or otherwise screws up as soon as I turn off the screen. Please fix it

ReplyDeleteI am using this app to help reduce blood pressure with great success.Controls are simple and it's easy to use. Thank you
ReplyDeleteBabs
Can you say more? I want to try app as opposed to spending $300 for Resparate machine. Also have temporary asthma at moment, so better breath control should help. Tx.
DeleteReally great application. Thanks
ReplyDeleteI am thankful to you for sharing this awesome article with this helpful knowledge. It is a very useful article about the How to use Binaural Beats.Thank you, informative and well-spoken. Lots of value!
ReplyDelete10 years ago I got into this type of breath work and I used to count in my head. It started to drive me crazy and was hard to maintain an even counting rhythm when my breathing got stretched out. I wished for an app like this for years.
ReplyDeleteThis is perfect.
Though I could go for a function that allows you to ramp up and down in the same session.
Many thanks for programming this.
Hi Nathanicus! We're glad you like the app. Check out this page for how to ramp your times:
Deletehttp://pacedbreathing.blogspot.com/2014/01/how-to-use-ramp-to-improve-your.html
If alarm option would be added in tabs (for maditation) thets app would be the most perfect outthere.
ReplyDeletethanks for the suggestion - we'll look at adding this in next release, but it may be awhile.
DeleteIs there a way to turn vibration on netween inhale, hold and exhale incase i wanna do the breathing excersice with my eyes closed?
ReplyDeleteFirst I'd like to thank you for this great app. My suggestionion would be adding a slow pulsing sound fuction like a metronome that could be programmed by tapping. Peace health and strength to all.
ReplyDeletePaced Breathing is a super aplication for a evryvone
ReplyDeleteFor a me and a my family
♥️♥️♥️
How do I change the name of the profile? Or delete a profile?
ReplyDeletethe X button in the menu will delete profiles (if you don't see it, click the menu button in the upper right hand corner, it may be in there if your phone is on the smaller side). You can't rename a profile, but you can create a new one with the right name (it'll copy settings of the profile you're currently on) and delete the old one
DeleteThank you for the wonderful app.
ReplyDeleteIt helps me to control my high blood pressure. Greatly appreciated.
People are still discovering this app. I found it through James Nestor's book "Breath". I am liking how specific I can set the intervals, and the functionality and ease of use is great. I will be recommending Paced Breathing to my people.
ReplyDeleteHow can i Know if i did it good, there is no history? I cannot see what i dit with my breathing? If i was in heart coherence? How low en zeep, high my heartbeat was?
ReplyDeleteI added a profile but I'm not happy with it. I can see the delete option but I can't get it to delete the profile in question.. Is there a trick to it perhaps?
ReplyDeleteSwitch to another profile (for example, the default profile) and then tap the "X" icon in the top bar. A dialogue will open where you can select the profile to delete.
DeleteI also found your well-made app through James Nestor's book "Breath". The functionality of the free app is excellent but I bought the upgrades anyway: please keep making quality apps like this!
